Almost Done!

These past two weeks have involved 12 to 14 hour days, moving, unpacking, cooking and getting ready for the housewarming party which was scheduled for Memorial Day weekend.
The movers came the 18th and made several trips from the storage unit and the garage across the street, moving in what furniture and boxes I thought I would want to use in the cottage.  Pictures of this move you ask?  Nope, didn't even think to take a single picture.  What kind of blogger am I???
I did take time out of the busy schedule to cook the very first meal at the cottage and to test the gas stove.  Menu: linguine with clam sauce, arugula salad with feta, garlic toast (for dipping into the sauce) and several scotches!  Yummy.

I was able to stay at the cottage the first night and here is the view from the deck in the early morning.  After this quite moment, it was unpacking and washing everything before putting it away.

At the same time, my friend and neighbor, Deb, whose son and daughter-in-law were so badly wounded at the Marathon bombing was able to get away for a couple of nights.  Needed to feed her and take good care of her, so...meal 2.

Haddock poached in tomatoes, capers, olives and wine, with feta topping, wilted spinach and multi-grain baguette for dipping.  A hearty red too!

The next few pictures are from the same point in the great room, turning around.  Here you can see the view, the fireplace, TV, and living room space.  I have used my parents Heywood-Wakefield furniture from the Blue Anchor and even found room for my mother's antique corn cutter.  I used to set my hair in rollers each night by it, watching TV and trying to stay up past my bedtime.  Good memories.
Turning right, you can see the dining area with my swap shop table, chairs and chandelier.  Chair seats are covered with Ralph Lauren tablecloths, stain resistant, gotten at Home Goods when they were on sale.  Tablecloths and shower curtains make good choices for inexpensive fabric to use for seat cushions, drapes, bed skirts, etc.  I have to give my friend Rosella the credit for this idea as she used table cloths for drapes years ago.  The drift wood "heron" was brought back from Florida years ago by my mother.  My dad thought she was crazy but it lived at the Blue Anchor, my mother's condo at the Belmont and now here.  I love it.

Continuing to turn right the kitchen comes into view.  I would recommend to anyone the Jet Mist granite with the antique finish.  It looks like soapstone with none of the maintenance issues.  I also think it looks like the black sand on some beaches.  Has a fabulous texture to it as well.
This is the Mimi McCallum corner.  Mimi is the cousin of Kurt Spence and a good friend of mine as well.  Mimi and her husband, John, came to stay at the cottage a few years ago and she painted the marsh picture, with lime green and coral kayaks, for me.  Her sea grapes picture is in this corner as well.  The Heywood-Wakefield desk is also a dump find.
Another shot of the kitchen.  The floor cloth I painted for the old kitchen works perfectly in the new space, making me very happy.
Moving on to the guest room.  The morning light in here is amazing, no sleeping late when you visit.
Guest room from another angle.  Am not sure this will stay this way, but love that the first paint by numbers picture I got in Florida works in this room.  The mirror was a dump find that I had in my bedroom in the old cottage but it works best here now.
The mermaid bath is better than I had hoped.  It makes me smile every time I go into the space.  Shelf and mirror frame are dump finds and add to the whimsy of the room.
My bedroom is the least finished room in the cottage.  Pictures are not hung and I haven't figured out what to put at the end of the bed.  Guess there will have to be at least one more blog entry when this room is finished.  Bloomie, the cat, is very happy here even if it is not finished!
Master bedroom as well.  Better pics to come.
But who really cares if the room is finished with this view from the bed, not me!  I get to wake up to this each and every morning, worth its weight in gold!
I have decided that I love to redo bathrooms.  My bathroom is tranquil and timeless.  the light fixture makes me happy with its art deco feel.
Since there has been a great deal of rain on the Cape since I moved in, I even christened the indoor shower.

Shower door is great.  Really like the fact that it was centered in the middle of the space with stationary panels on either side.  How about that polka dotted towel I found to round out the design, gotta love it!
Although the landscaping is not finished, thought I would share what has been done so far.  I bought the grasses and the hardy hibiscuses at Rice's Market late last fall.  They wintered over in my garage and seem to be thriving.  Next came the great buys at Job Lot's truck sale early this spring.  Azaleas, Spireas, Rhodies, and a different grass were gotten in one trip.  Then I heard about the Arbor Day sale at Agway where I got three roses and several Hydrangeas.  Great variety of colors and blooming throughout the year.

View of the cottage as you arrive.  Driveway and walkways will be bordered by cobblestone with small gravel filled in.  Cannot wait for that to start.  might now have to sweep the floors in the cottage twice a day once the sand issue is resolved.

This might be my favorite view of the new exterior of the cottage.  Love, love, love the wall, low seats that run the length of the deck, the roof line, outdoor shower, and the different windows.  With all the work done and the new look, the cottage still fits into the neighborhood, something of which I am very proud.

Lessons Learned:

1.  As you would imagine, designs for electrical work favors those who are right handed.  As a lefty, I should have reversed the bathrooms so the electric outlet were on the left, not the right.  Not such a big deal as I have been living in a right handed world my whole life, but something to think about in the future.
2.  When we were planning the cottage I realized that the "extras" were adding up.  After some online research, I found that most projects go over budget from 10 to 18%.  That being said, when Russ handed me the "extras" bill, I asked if I should wait to sit down before I opened it.  Good news, we did go over but only by about 8 % and I did get just about everything I wanted.
3.  I had the time of my life during this project.  There was few if any issues, all the providers gave that extra bit to make the cottage the best it could be, the space is perfect for what I need or want...ahhhh!

"Zipper, Button Hole, Hem"

When I was first learning to sew, the fun was watching the skirt go together and I was ready to wear it to school the very next day.  But before I could, I had to do the finishing work: the zipper, the button hole and the hem.  As some of you might imagine, I was very impatient to see the finished product.  Nothing, I mean nothing has changed.  I am impatient but we need to complete the finishing touches, the proverbial " zipper, button hole and hem."
Here is a few tantalizing hints of what has been keeping me out of trouble and getting the cottage ready for your first visit to Cedar Lane.

The chandelier is hung...
The pendant light and glass bottles above the sink.
My vintage plates from my "dump" runs washed and in place.
Important things like the candy dish getting filled.
One of two ovens hooked up and tested.  Warming drawer and pie baking about to commence.
I bought this bowl months ago and told Russ and Brendan to build me a house around it.  In place and ready for guests.
Guest room linens waiting for furniture.
Don't know how many guests will ever shower inside but the tub is ready for whatever may come its way.
Master shower bar is in, waiting for doors on Monday.  Even the shower gel is color coordinated!
Towels, check, hand soap, check, Sudoku books in place, only question...Who made me buy that sea foam colored egg!
My all time favorite night light in and working.
Florida mermaid saluting you and extending her invitation to come visit and see it all in person.
Color getting added in layers...
Outdoor shower up and running, now if only we could get hot water.
The heron is back on the deck and watching the water.  All is almost ready for that water view from all the rooms.

Moving in day is probably next Saturday, the 18th, and I will finally be able to wake up and see the water in the morning light.  Lots to still do, especially the outside landscaping, but it is coming together so nicely.  The cable people are coming on Tuesday and then the Geek Squad come Wednesday to hook the new 46" flat panel TV above the fireplace.  The cottage will be ready for whatever audio/video/ interactive activities we throw its way.  Best of all we can run the hair dryer and have lights on at the same time.
I will be moving stuff around for a long time to come so plan a visit, give me your opinions of what works and we can enjoy "all this with a water view!"

Lessons Learned:
1.  When packing up for a major renovation such as I have done, pack up what you will need first and have it at the front of your storage space.  I cannot find my tools, vacuum, paints, and some furniture I would like to use to get the house ready.  Hangers too, I know I have some but where?
2.  Mice get into everything!  They found that if they ate through the vinyl seat of one of my stools it made a very cozy home for the winter.  Gross!
3.  More cabinets and fewer drawers in the kitchen is better.
4.  You will return as many items as you have bought before all is said and done.  Marshalls, TJ's, and Home Goods have seen me more than they care too.  When buying, open the packages and insert the receipts so when you have to return things you have them.  Also, if you wait too long, they will not take things back, even for a store credit.  Anyone need three large shower heads?  HA,HA.
5.  I have more stuff than I need.  Amen

Bittersweet Time

The last two weeks have been a very bittersweet time for me.  The cottage is getting closer and closer to being done but all this has been overshadowed by the Marathon bombings.  My next door neighbors' (here on Cedar Lane) son and daughter in law were both seriously injured in the bombing.  Both have had their left legs amputated below the knee and their daughter in law has also lost her right heel.  They are struggling to heal and have had many surgeries so far and many more to come.  Their ordeal has been with me ever since that Monday afternoon and it has taken away some of the joy I have with this project coming to a close.  I know that this has been a life altering ordeal for all, not just the kids, but I look forward to welcoming them to my new cottage for many years to come.

The finishing touches, lighting, fixtures, flower boxes were all ordered online.  The composite Azak-like boxes that I could buy locally were priced at over $200 per box.  I need 5 boxes for the front of the cottage.   I went online and found ones I liked even better for $99 each.  They were here in three days and Russ and Brendan couldn't wait to install them.
One up, four more to go.  The windows will be completed with black shutters that Brendan built to mimic the original shutters on the cottage.
Boxes up and ready for flowers.  Just have to wait until it warms up enough on the Cape to paint the trim.  Cannot wait!
,Meanwhile, Daniel and his team arrived a week ago to paint the interiors.  After Mary Sliney and I, with additional opinions from many friends, decided on the colors, it was time to see if what we had chosen worked. All the woodwork is in BM Dove White.  I was not sure about this when everyone suggested it, but I love the warm white it provides for the whole house.
Not a great shot but all the door lined up in the master bedroom getting sprayed.  Gave me an idea...hmmm...could they spray my table and chairs while they had the sprayer going.
No sooner said than done,  chairs and table legs sprayed in the house, table top sprayed in the shed.  Now to the seat cushions.
Eight chairs done, cannot set up the table yet as the floors must be sanded, stained, and sealed but you can get the idea.  I am so excited to see the chandelier hanging above the table too.
Guest room painted...
Hard to see the color here but the floors are sanded and stained.  Need to dry for two days and then sealed.  Getting closer by the minute.
Master bedroom is in a light sea foam color.  The bead board makes the headboard wall appear a bit darker as well as some texture.
Floors stained, am really liking the contrast that this darker stain gives the rooms.  Think the furnishings will pop when added.
Great Room painted...
Bad picture but you get the idea!
Fireplace and view.
The plumbers and electrician has been busy this week also.  Guest room sink almost open for business.  I love the faucets.  I should, must have looked at thousands of faucets before I decided on these.  I surfed at Build.com, Overstock.com, individual dealers web sites, there must be a hundred bookmarks on my computer right now, but it was worth the time.  Saved money buying on line, got everything in a timely fashion, usually within three days or so, and everything arrived in perfect shape.  I would recommend Build.com and Overstock too.
After looking at hundreds of kitchen faucets I decided on this very simple Moen.  The pull down and pull out faucets of today are so huge that they overshadowed the sink and the whole kitchen.  KISS it is my motto...keep it simple stupid!
The faucet and the microwave are in.  Apparently the worker bees were wanting to be able to reheat their coffee, hence the installation of the micro.  Wish they were wanting to cook a roast, then maybe I would get the stove in too!
While the work/painting was going on inside, the deck was getting started outside.
Narrow portion of the deck in front of the master bedroom with the outdoor shower at the end.  Custom height of just 5' so that you even have the view while you shower.
Cedar walls on the shower with bench seat to follow.
Deck is waiting for the seat to be build this week.  The bench will go all around the sides of the deck so that there need not be a 36" high railing to block the view.  You do remember it is all about the view!

Lesson Learned:
1.  There are many horrible people in this world; their motives cannot be explained, their actions cannot always be deterred.  That being said, the actions of the police, marathone volunteers, hospital staff, and bystanders on Marathon Monday talk to the good in people.  My friends have been comforted by so many, in the hospital, through emails and with offers of help and financial support.  Although none of the people effected by the bombings will ever be the same, I know that the number of good people in this world still do outnumber the bad.
